Pic(k) of the week 2: Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi - Hotel on the F1 racetrack

Yesterday afternoon, I spend some time photographing one of my favourite hotels in Abu Dhabi; The Yas Viceroy on the Formula One racetrack.

I have a special connection with the building, as I was directly involved in photographing the construction of the building several years ago for an Architectural client. Since that time, the images of what was then called, "The Yas hotel" have remained one of my best selling Architectural images.

Whenever I'm in the neighbourhood at the right time of day, I try to make a few new images of this amazing building designed by Asymptote Architecture

Of architectural and engineering significance is the expanse of sweeping curvilinear glass and steel covering, known as the "Grid shell". It features an LED lighting system incorporating video feeds that are transmitted over the 5389 pivoting diamond shaped color changing, LED panes. The Grid shell component is a key element of the overall design and architectural significance of the project and produces an atmospheric like veil that can be seen from miles away.

It is the only new hotel that was build on top of a F1 racetrack.

The 499 room 5-star Yas Viceroy hotel which opened in November 2009, has become a landmark for Abu Dhabi and the whole of the UAE in general.
